Boston’s Bio-IT World conference revisited

May 23, 2018 | By Jolanda Strubel

Looking back at a successful Bio-IT World conference in Boston, May 15-17, we’d like to give you an impression of The Hyve’s contribution to this year’s event.

Hackathon

The Hyve_Bio-IT World2018-16Kees van Bochove and Sjoerd van Hagen participated in a hackathon focusing on FAIR Data for Genomic Applications. The two-day event, organized ahead of the conference, brought together IT professionals and life science teams. They worked on actual genomic datasets, evaluating the FAIRness of the data sets and determining what measures could be taken to make them more FAIR. The results of the hackathon can be found here.

Busy booth

During the conference, The Hyve’s booth (418) was often a busy spot. The Hyvies –big and small– might have helped draw people to the stand, but the interest of the visitors certainly went beyond the mascots. Many of them showed interest in our products and services: tranSMART, cBioPortal, OHDSI, Glowing Bear, and RADAR-base.

Best of show

Our RADAR-base platform was one of the contestants for the Best of Show Award 2018. For the Best of Show program, a panel of expert judges from academia and industry screen eligible new products. This year the judges considered 46 new products and viewed product presentations on site from 18 finalists.

The Hyve_Bio-IT World2018-26On Thursday, the jury visited The Hyve’s stand to learn more about RADAR-base. Ward Weistra did a good job explaining to them how the platform works: how research projects are managed, how wearable devices are added and how data is transferred via a secured connection.

Later that day, the judges named winners in six categories: Data Integration & Management; Analysis & Data Computing; Genomic Data Services; Data Visualization & Exploration; Storage Infrastructure & Hardware; and the Judges’ Prize. RADAR-base won the Best of Show Award in the category Data Integration & Management. A result that was, of course, appropriately celebrated.

Workshops and lectures

The Hyve_Bio-IT World2018-33During the three-day event the 3400 participants could participate in 14 pre-conference workshops and attend lectures given in 15 parallel conference tracks.

Kees presented on FAIRification Case Studies. He highlighted the experience The Hyve has gained by implementing the FAIR principles in pharmaceutical companies, hospitals and biobanks.

The Hyve will be attending the Bio-IT World conference again in 2019. We look forward to welcoming you at our booth!
